Description: De Gamles By is a complex of homes for senior citizens located in the historic part of Copenhagen. It also houses a municipal nursing home, as well as an urban garden system and a small park.
Process: Adaptation of urban spaces to climate change, protection against local flooding.
Community: An ethnically, culturally, socially and economically diverse neighborhood – facilities designed for seniors.
NBS tools used: Bioswales were installed along the internal roads of the complex, and in the internal courtyards rain gardens and community gardens were placed between the longitudinal pavilions. A small urban park has been designed between the residential complex described above and the new educational facilities to the rear, with spaces for active recreation for both older people and young people (intergenerational integration). There are grass retention basins on the extensive lawns. Biodiversity has also been taken into account, with numerous logs placed in the area to provide habitats for insects.
