CoAdapt team

The CoAdapt project is implemented by a consortium of Polish and Norwegian researchers from universities and scientific institutes, including: Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Western Norway Research Institute, University of Warsaw, Oslo Metropolitan University. The team also includes scientists from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Warsaw University of Technology, and the University of Gdańsk. We cooperate closely with the capital city of Warsaw, where we test the solutions developed in the project.

Geographer, environmental planner, PhD in Earth Sciences, DSc in architecture and urban planning. Scholarship holder of the Fulbright Commission and the Kosciuszko Foundation. Her scientific interests focus on natural conditions in spatial planning in the context of adaptation of cities to climate change at the local to regional scale, including the development of green infrastructure and green belts. She has prepared many practical reports coordinating multidisciplinary teams. Agata is the leader of the Norwegian IdeaLab – CoAdapt ‘Communities for Climate Change Action’ grant and the leader of the WP3 and WP4 work package.

Landscape architect, doctor of technical sciences in the discipline of architecture and urban planning. She is interested in the use of modern forms of greenery as an element of urban revitalization, adaptation of urban spaces to climate change, and creation of sustainable cities – friendly to their inhabitants. Agnieszka is the leader of the WP 5 and WP 6 work packages.

Hanne Cecilie Geirbo, PhD

Department of Computer Science, Oslo Metropolitan University Master's degree in social anthropology and PhD in computer science.

Her research interests span a range of issues related to technology and society. She has experience in interdisciplinary research on community solar energy use, and the role of civil society in urban planning and urban design. She previously worked in the telecommunications industry. Hanne is the leader of the WP2 work package.

PhD in social anthropology. Mari has experience in research on the long-term effects of crises and disasters, and sustainability in social movements, and is currently involved in several co-creation projects on climate change adaptation. Mari is the leader of the WP1 work package.

Analyst in Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing. Graduate of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies with a specialization in geoecology. She obtained her doctoral degree at the Forestry Faculty of SGGW in the field of forestry. She deals with landscape analyses using GIS tools and parameterization of vegetation conditions. In the CoAdapt project, she deals with the geographic location of neighborhoods and the identification of their existing state.

She obtained her PhD degree by realizing the research topic of modeling the dynamics of operation of a flat plate solar collector. As part of her professional practice, she has completed scientific internships in the fields of integrated photovoltaic systems, absorption air-conditioning systems using vacuum solar collectors, analysis and design of photovoltaic systems, and cooperation of such a system with the power grid. Her research activities are mainly carried out in international teams, teaching, and research projects. In the CoAdapt grant, she deals with renewable energy technologies and the identification of the benefits of their installation in residential areas.

Her scientific interests focus on the influence of the environment on the thermal microclimate, and the formation of urban heat island and cold lakes. She also deals with water and air pollution including light pollution. She is involved in spa climate research. She uses GIS tools, ground monitoring data from IGiPZ PAN, and thermal images. Within the CoAdapt project, she is involved in the acquisition and analysis of geospatial data of neighborhoods well adapted to climate change.

The main areas of scientific interest are the history of garden art, conservation design, possibilities and limitations of applying nature-based solutions in historical spaces. Combining her scientific interests with her experience of ongoing design activity, she supports the CoAdapt project on the applicability of green-blue solutions in public spaces.

Member of the Legal and Urban Planning Team of the Committee for Spatial Planning of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the CoAdapt project, she deals with eco-spatial indices applied in the development of neighborhoods.

Environmental educator, landscape architect, and populariser of the fourth nature, and since 2019 holding a doctoral degree. Currently president of the Children in Nature Foundation. Author of texts on scrubland, the potential of wasteland, wilderness in the city, renaturalization, or environmental education in the urban jungle. He has published an ebook on fourth nature, which is hope for cities. In his green areas designs, there is room for naturalness and wildness. In the CoAdapt project, he is responsible for leading workshops with residents of tested neighborhoods.

Prof. Mariusz Kistowski

Head of the Department of Landscape and Environmental Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Gdańsk

Geographer, for more than 30 years a comprehensive physical geographer and landscape ecologist, now representing socio-economic geography and spatial management. Specialist in the field of landscape protection and natural determinants of spatial management. For many years he has been involved in the parameterization of sustainable development and environmental management, including strategic environmental assessments and landscape park protection. In recent years he has been working more extensively on greenhouse gas emissions in open spaces and the mitigation of associated environmental change. In the CoAdapt project, he is a scientific consultant.

Zoologist, PhD in animal sciences. In his scientific and didactic work, he deals with animal biology and ecology, with particular emphasis on herpetology. He is interested in broadly defined nature conservation issues, including biodiversity. In the CoAdapt project, his role is to explain the importance of neighborhoods for wildlife, to raise awareness, and to remind us that by shaping the landscape around us, we either create or destroy their habitat.

Prof. Magdalena Kuchcik

Prof. Magdalena Kuchcik

Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization, Polish Academy of Sciences

Geographer, climatologist, PhD in Earth Sciences in the field of geography. Her scientific interests focus on bioclimatology (the influence of weather and climate on humans), local climate (in particular in spa towns), and urban climate. She has developed and oversees a monitoring network of thermal and humid conditions in the Warsaw agglomeration and analyses the urban heat island concerning the intensity of buildings or the proportion of greenery. She has researched the climate of housing neighborhoods and recently she has begun to study the impact of Warsaw’s parks on the surrounding areas. In the CoAdapt project, Magdalena is a specialist in a local climate.

A Practical Guide”. Member of ISAGA (International Simulation and Gaming Association). Doctoral student at the School of Social Sciences of the University of Warsaw. In the CoAdapt project, he is responsible for transforming its aims and objectives into educational game concepts.

Environmental engineer specializing in hydrology and water management (habilitation in the scientific discipline of environmental engineering, mining, and energy). Her research interests focus on water management planning and, the methodological basis of water-economy balances, including consideration of protection requirements of aquatic and water-dependent ecosystems in water management in river catchments and hydrological facilities. In the CoAdapt project, Dorota deals with water issues, in particular solutions for rainwater management in neighborhoods.

She researched the impact of construction works on tree life and assessments of the long-term impact of damage and statics of urban trees. She participated in the development of a Polish method for the valuation of trees and the assessment and valuation of ecosystem services. She is working on tree preservation solutions, such as suspended (ramped) pavements and stone-soil mix, or NbS, which allows the introduction of vegetation in “paved” parts of cities. In the CoAdapt project, she deals with the ‘parameterization’ of green infrastructure, especially trees.

Geographer, geomorphologist. His main research interests focus on contemporary geomorphological processes and the effects of anthropopressure in areas of high environmental value. He is interested in anthropopressure in areas serving tourism and recreation. He is involved in the topic of sustainable transport in urban areas. In direct relation to landscape development, he is interested in environmental determinants of spatial planning and the performance of environmental pre-decision analyses for design purposes. He particularly appreciates the practical applicability of scientific environmental data. In the CoAdapt project, he is a specialist in the influence of landforms and the type of substrate (geological structure, soils) on natural processes.

Landscape architect and urban planner.
Her research interests revolve around adaptation strategies of small and medium-sized European cities to climate change. Blue-green infrastructure in the form of sustainable rainwater management, nature-based technical and material (NBS) solutions and ecosystem services are her main research topics. In the CoAdapt project, she supports issues related to the application of green-blue infrastructure solutions in urban spaces.

Landscape architect. Her research interests revolve around issues related to universal design, including in particular new technologies and products for creating pedestrian routes. Walkways that are comfortable for all user groups but also nature-friendly are the main areas of research. In the CoAdapt project, she is responsible for conducting walks to motivate residents to take action to adapt to climate change.

Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Technology and Ecology. Her research interests focus on the design of circular systems for clean energy production for consumers, taking into account the changing design environment. She is involved in process and systems modeling. One of her research areas is the justification of models for coordinating configurations of clean energy production systems by biogas plants from different types of waste from individual housing developments, as well as the use of biofuels in housing complexes and determining their performance. Her research uses computer modeling, modern big data processing, and computational intelligence technologies. Within the CoAdapt project, he is involved in model justification and coordination of project configurations for circular clean energy production by biogas plants from individual residential waste, taking into account the specific project environment.

Socio-economic geographer, PhD in Earth Sciences. She is interested in the functioning, development, and planning of cities, as well as the impact of spatial development on the quality of life. She researches space, culture, and the history of socialism and post-socialism. She is interested in issues of environment, skills, knowledge, materials and utopia, nostalgia, and simulation. In the CoAdapt project, Katarzyna is involved in the day-to-day implementation of tasks.

Master’s degree in renewable energy. She is currently involved in several research projects on climate change adaptation. In one of them (UNCHAIN), she is involved in the development and use of a chain of influence method to determine the degree of stakeholder involvement in the co-creation of knowledge and participatory processes. In the CoAdapt project, she is involved in the implementation of WP1, including research on how to motivate and increase the involvement of residents in adaptation activities.

She is currently working on several projects dealing with the co-creation of knowledge for urban and environmental adaptation to climate change. In the CoAdapt project, she is involved in the implementation of WP1, including research on motivating and increasing citizen involvement in adaptation activities.

Christiane Meyer-Habighorst, MSc

Geographer, she holds a Master’s degree from the Institute of Social Sciences and Environmental Geography at the University of Freiburg (Germany) with a specialization in the geography of global change. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Public Law from the University of Münster (Germany) and the University of Salamanca (Spain). She is interested in the interconnectedness of social and natural processes in climate change adaptation, global transformation in local contexts, equity, human health, and feminist methodologies. In the CoAdapt project, she is involved in the implementation of WP1, including research on motivating and enhancing the involvement of local people in adaptation activities.
