project name:
CoAdapt – Communities for Climate Change Action
The main objective of the CoAdapt project is to design a simulation game to help people decide how best to adapt their housing estate to climate change. We would like to apply a so-called ‘serious game’ as a tool to motivate residents to take action to adapt their neighborhoods to climate change.
We hope that designed in such a way tool – the game called ‘Neighborhood with Climate’ – will contribute to raising environmental awareness and, as a consequence, improve the residents’ quality of life not only in the scale of their neighborhood but also in regards to the entire city.
The game ‘Neighborhood with Climate’ is developed in board and computer versions, and the neighborhood indicated by residents is the playing field. In the game, pro-adaptation measures can be taken within selected neighborhoods to minimize the negative effects of climate change, from microclimate improvement solutions to rainwater management. In addition, the game makes it possible to verify the effectiveness level of the chosen solutions, whether we have reduced the temperature, improved air quality, and how much rainwater has been captured.
The CoAdapt project was developed during the IdeaLab workshop ‘Cities of the Future: Services and Solutions’, organized by the National Centre for Research and Development as operator of the ‘Applied Research’ program implemented under the EEA Financial Mechanism and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021. These activities aimed to develop groundbreaking, interdisciplinary ideas for research projects on services and solutions for cities in 2040.
